Let the countdown begin....

Monday, January 23rd, 2012 my finance left for 10 weeks of Basic Training immediately followed by 18 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT). Fingers crossed, August 13th will be his graduation for AIT and I can finally bring him home! I can't spend my days counting down to August. That's too far away! So in my head I'm trying to make it to April 4th when he graduates from Basic and I'll finally get to see him again.

But I saw this idea for weight loss and thought it would be the perfect way to count down the days until August... 203 days to be exact. :/ 4 days in... 199 to go!

I can't wait until the vases are reversed and
there's only 4 rocks left in the one on the right.

Engagement 'Announcement'

I wanted a way to remember my engagement. With a few items I came up with a cute idea.
It started with a cute engagement card and the ribbon from
the ring box. I grabbed a frame (found it at Goodwill for a
buck!) and some scrapbook paper.
I love this card!
Cut my scrapbook paper down to the correct size
I had some spray paint laying around (I believe the color
was Almond). I wasn't too worried about getting a good,
even coat. 1. It was cold out. 2. I wanted a rough look.
Sanded down parts of the frame to expose the wood
I cut down the card and added the date of our engagement
Punched two holes at the top for the ribbon
Tied a bow... which I found is not a strong skill of mine
Add in the frame. I used some double sided tape to hold up
both the bow and the tails so they didn't fall into the writing
Now we'll have something to remember our engagement!

Custom Address Book with pockets

With Jason headed to Basic Training I wanted to be sure he had all his contact's info; addresses, phone numbers, Birthday's, etc. But I also wanted to make it adjustable so he didn't have to take a huge notebook for just a dozen contacts. So I came up with this idea based on my 52 Reasons I Love You blog.
First, I designed a template. I created this one in Adobe Illustrator
but you could easily make one in Word or Excel
I then went through and cropped all the pages down
I had extra book rings and a few 3x5 dividers left over from
other projects. And a few months ago I scored this alphabet stamp
on clearance that ended up working perfectly!

I went punched holes in all the cards and dividers.
I also added a cover page and a back page in a thicker stock
(manilla folder) to protect the address book a little better.
I wanted to add pockets to the covers so he
has a place to put stamps. So I created a
template from the leftover folder.
Score the side and bottom flaps and use double sided tape
to stick them to the covers.
Don't forget to punch holes
And you have your very own address book!

 * Unfortunately when he reported in we were told that personal items would be confiscated and trashed. So I ended up coming home with a few items he wanted to take including his puzzle piece from our matching key ring. He decided to take just one of his favorite cards from the 52 Reasons I Love You. Hopefully he'll be able to sneak that one by. :/

Sew, what should I do?

After I can't tell you how many years I'm finally getting an art studio. With our basement cleaned out, the work has begun in setting up my own studio. And it's not only an art studio, with a 40 inch flat screen tv, love seat and couch it's practically a whole new home for me! Pictures coming soon!

And if that's not enough, I finally can pull out the sewing cabinet my mom gave me. And she said I'd never use it. So after making my Boot Socks (see my Upcycle an old sweater to make Boot Socks blog) I got the itch to make myself some other new clothes. As always I've started a board on Pinterest under Make Your Own Clothes. My love for upcycling continues with reusing old t-shirts but I've also found a few items to try out my sewing skills on. (Mom, if you're reading this, prepare yourself for several phone calls.)

Treat your body right!

Everyone starts off the new year making resolutions of working out and eating better. Personally, I'm anti-new-years-resolutions. If you want to make a change in yourself or your lifestyle do it today. Having said that... 6 days into the new year I learned I have thyroid disease. Uncanny timing but I realized it was time to change not just my diet but my lifestyle too.

Do yourself a favor, if your doctor diagnoses you with something, DON'T GOOGLE IT! You'll end up with more questions than answers not to mention the stress and worries.

Not to sound like a hippy but with a slew of family and friends, and myself believing in correcting ailments through natural methods I've started looking into not only an all natural and homemade diet but also other products. So I take it back, Google thyroid disease, what can cause it, what foods not to eat. Here's a small list of what you'll find.

 Higher Risk of having Thyroid Disease
  • You have a family member with a thyroid problem
  • You or a family member have another autoimmune disease
  • You're female
  • You've just had a baby
  • You're near menopause or menopausal 
  • You're a smoker
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Overconsumption of isoflavone-intensive soy products, such as soy protein
  • An overconsumption or shortage of iodine in the diet can also trigger some thyroid problems. 
  • Overconsumption of uncooked "goitrogenic" foods, such as brussels sprouts, broccoli, turnips, radishes, cauliflower, cabbage and kale
  • Surgical treatments for thyroid cancer, goiter, or nodules, in which all or part of the thyroid is removed
 Foods not to eat
  • broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cassava root (found in tapioca), cauliflower, lima beans, maize (corn), mustard, peanuts, pine nuts, sweet potatoes, soy, soybeans, turnips
  • Unsaturated fats such as flax, soybean, safflower, corn and canola also should be avoided.
  • Avoid foods high in cysteine - red meat and eggs 
Take a look at those lists... it's a little scary especially for us ladies. And the no-no list of foods?! Broccoli and corn are my fav veggies! I drink soy milk because I'm lactose intolerance. And while I'm more of a chicken girl, I absolutely love eggs for breakfast and the occasional juicy steak.

Now, this is just a list of natural FOODS you such avoid.... what about all those packaged and processed foods, the chemicals you clean your counter with, the soup you wash your hands and clothes with???? If all these natural foods can affect my body how are all these other products hurting me? Hence my decision for not only a diet change but a change in many everyday items I use.

Pinterest has helped me start this change. Visit my Homemade Products board for several ideas. Call it a New Years Resolution... call it a change in my life but I will change the products I use. Notice there was no 'I'd like to' or 'I plan to' in that sentence. I will change my life and so should all of you.
